It is much easier to get and stay organized when the clutter is eliminated

  • Schedule time session to get rid of your clutter, even if it is only 15 minutes
  • get a trash bag and be committed to filling it
  • Start with one room at a time and then pick an area such as a drawer
  • clear items that don’t require decisions such as plastic bags, margarine containers, stained clothing etc. and then move on to other items
  • Sort into piles – Throw away, Give Away, Sell and Keep
  • Holding items increases attachment and  emotions – have a friend or a professional organizer hold the items for you

Recognize that it can be tough making the decision to get rid of something, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I really love this item or just the memories? (you can take a picture)
  • Does it serve a useful purpose or fit into my vision for this room?
  • When is the last time I used it? (within the past year)
  • How many do I need? (decide on limits of what to keep – example: 15 plastic bags)
  • Will I need it on a definite date in the future?
  • Would it be difficult to get another one?
  • Do I need it for legal or tax purposes?
  • Is this item mine? (are you just storing it for someone else)

Remember to keep your goals in mind.

  • A beautiful home –  that is calm and serene, one that you will be happy to return to everyday.
  • Saving money – not buying useless things or items you already have.
  • Reducing your stress – starting each day with a new confidence in yourself
  • Time management – the ability to find things quickly, and not miss deadlines
  • Organization with systems the whole family will use
